Upon arrival in Chios, check-in at your hotel.
The main city, also called Chios, is built in a narrow plain with low hills opposite to the Turkish coast, in the same place whe-re the ancient city was found. Today, it is a commercially active and lively city whe-re yet the old flavors can still be noticed since big parts of the Genoese fortress with houses of the Ottoman period are still standing. The Byzantine fortress (10th century A.D.) has been renovated and adapted to their needs by the various consecutive conquerors of the island. The main entrance and the western wall show Occidental signs and blazons, some parts of the 60 meters wide ditch surrounding the fortress are still in their original shape. It was built in the Byzantine period and was then used as the administrative center of the island. It enjoyed a great development during the Genovese governance. It was an example of a Renaissance-type city. Its walls resisted numerous attacks from Genoese, Venetians and Turks. You will also visit the Justiniani Museum and other interesting Byzantine monuments such as the Saint George Church.
