The prefecture of Rethymno, one of the four prefectures of Crete, lies between Chania and Heraklion. It is full of magnificent beaches, interesting archaeological sites and Byzantine churches, lovely villages, lively resorts and its capital, the town of Rethymno, is a very attractive city which has kept many examples of the sumptuous Venetian architecture. The plethora of charms and beauties astonishes every visitor.

In the prefecture of Rethymno various coastal resorts can be found. Many picturesque mountainous villages are also scattered in the area, proposing just the minimum in terms of accommodations and facilities but offering the possibility to see and live the local traditional way of life. Anogia is one of the most beautiful of those villages. You can't miss Rethymno town (that is more like a big village), Agia Galini, Plakias and others...

Like in the other prefectures forming the wonderful island of Crete, Rethymno possesses a wide choice of idyllic beaches and secluded coves with crystalline waters. The most popular one is the most beautiful beach of Preveli which looks like a lagoon with emerald color waters, palm trees and warm sand. Other beaches are Agia Galini, Perivolia, Platanias.

For those seeking a way to enjoy their summer nights, Rethymno will be a real delight. Excellent taverns with Greek music, modern bars of all kinds of atmosphere and night clubs playing all kinds of music can be found in the city and in the beach resorts of Plakias and Agia Galini.
